Cherie Wilson

Human Trafficking in Our Backyards
and How It Effects You

Everyone realizes that human trafficking is a problem in the world but what most people do not realize is that it is here in our back door. The FBI has identified San Diego as one of 13 U.S. cities designated as a “high intensity child prostitution area.”

Come and learn what you can do to help this growing trend reverse direction.

Cherie Wilson was born in Puerto Rico, where she attended a Catholic school from Pre-K to 12. She went on to the University of Puerto Rico where she received a BA in Sociology. She later applied and was accepted to Duke University in its Master’s Program in the Sociology Department. Cherie then moved with her husband to Philadelphia.

During her 30 years in the Philadelphia area she had several jobs. She was the Program Coordinator of a Longitudinal Research Project on Alcoholism at Jefferson Hospital; taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for a non-profit; and taught Social Studies and ESL at an inner-city junior high school. She also attended Temple University and completed an MA in Elementary and Secondary Education.

After tiring of living in Philadelphia, the family moved to the suburbs and Cherie was hired by Fellowship Farm, an educational center in human relations and social change as the Director of a Refugee Relocation Program. A year later she became the Assistant Director and two years after that the Director. Cherie now resides in Oceanside where she joined Soroptimist of Vista and North County Inland Organization.

She loves the mission and the great women in the club. Since joining in 2003, she has held several positions: Treasurer, Vice President, President (two years), Director, and chaired many committees. She has been involved the club's human trafficking awareness programs for the past 11 years and holds personal fundraising events to support our Live your Dream Award recipients and Human Trafficking Awareness as a faculty member in 2008.

She holds an Ed.D. in Education from University of San Diego-San Diego State University Joint Doctoral Program with an emphasis in Literacy , an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and a B.S. from the University of Southern California.
